TUNING INTO THE FUTURE

Grace Lee Blogs reminds us that “We have the power within us to create the world anew” (p.78). She then adds that we “must have the courage to challenge ourselves to engage in activities that build a new and better world, by improving the physical, psychological, political and spiritual health of ourselves, our families, our communities, our cities, our world and our planet (p. 72).” “The Next American Revolution”, by Grace Lee Boggs.

Let’s begin our journey with the COLLECTIVE LEADERSHIP COMPASS by looking at FUTURE POSSIBILITIES.

No mater how structured the task of fulfilling the 17 Sustainable Development Goals might appear to be, leading is a creative act and creative energy needs regular and conscious renewal. One of the most powerful sources of such a renewal is our passion for the future. Therefore attending to FUTURE POSSIBILITIES is a key aspect of leadership. It allows us to bring our unique potential into the world. And as we contribute our gifts to the world, we learn from the world’s responses – both as individuals and as a collective.

Leading FUTURE POSSIBILITIES requires us to tune into the future. It asks for our willingness to observe trends, developments, new knowledge, and shifting consciousness. We need to make creative connections within our own thinking and the thinking of different people in order to open up new pathways for shifting our own and others’ habitual mindsets Individually, this means thinking beyond our limitations in order to sense future possibilities that we have not been aware of so far. Collectively, it means connecting to different minds, combining complementary expertise and experience.

Start by recognizing when you, or other people, are in the “glass is half full” or “the glass is half empty” mode. Then ask yourself if your vision is part of a larger vision. My experience is that intention creates energy fields. It organizes life. It creates order in our path, it attracts people and opportunities. When we do not have a larger vision our deeper intention withers and we fall short of our potential. Everything is possible when we begin to think to together.
